Purschke Honored as Outstanding ECC Alumnus

Union, Mo. - Joseph Purschke of Union was named recipient of the East Central College Outstanding Alumni Award for 2013.  The award is presented annually to honor an ECC graduate who has used his or her education and been of service to the community.

Cookie Hays, ECC’s vice president of student development, made the presentation at college commencement ceremonies held Saturday, May 18, at the campus in Union.

USDA Seeks Applications for Grants to Provide Technical Assistance to Help Rural Businesses Grow

COLUMBIA, MO – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that USDA is seeking applications from qualified organizations to provide technical assistance to rural businesses to help them expand and create jobs. 

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty.

The announcement is one part of the Department’s efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

“These grants will help businesses get access to planning, mentoring and other services that can help ensure their success,” Vilsack said.

Seth Schenck is the number one seed in Saturday's 800m final after winning his heat and running the fastest time in Friday’s prelims.

Jefferson City, Mo. - New Haven’s girls 4x800m (Hannah Pruessner, Hannah Kruse, Taylor Covington, and Kayla Borcherding) relay team came in third place, grabbing the first state medals for New Haven.

Chamois’s Alison Mehmert won the State Championship in Class 1 High Jump. (5-03)

Seth Schenck ran a career best time in the 1600m finals, finishing in second place with a time of 4:30.49 and Chamois's Clay Nolte won his first state medal, taking fifth place, running his career best time of 4:36.62.

Schenck and Clay will head into the 800m finals on Saturday seeded first and second after today's prelims.

Schenck will also run the anchor leg in Saturday's 4x800m relay.

Ruediger Wins First State Medal With Final Round Of 78 In Class 2 State Golf Classic

Nixa, Mo. - Hermann’s Austin Ruediger returned to the Missouri Class 2 State Golf Classic on Monday at Fremont Hills Country Club in Nixa, Mo. for the third straight year, winning his first state medal, finishing tied for 14th.

In 2011, Ruediger advanced to the state tournament for the first time, ending the final round tied with his teammate Colin Hart in 43rd.

JEFFERSON CITY–Whether your taste in outdoor activities runs toward fishing or hunting, May 25 is a day to mark on your calendar.

Missouri’s hunting season for gray and fox squirrels opens May 25 and runs through Feb. 15, 2014. Legal methods include rifles, shotguns, or archery equipment. The aggregate bag limit is 10 squirrels and the possession limit is 20.

“Aggregate” means hunters may harvest any combination of fox and gray squirrels so long as they do not exceed 10 squirrels total in one day. If hunters bag a daily limit two days in a row, they will have a possession limit of 20 squirrels. After that, they must eat or give away some squirrels before going hunting again in order to stay within the possession limit.

OBITUARY: New Haven: Richard C. Pratt (October 15, 1928 - May 13, 2013)

Richard C. Pratt, 84, of New Haven, Missouri, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, at New Haven Care Center.

Mr. Pratt was born in New Haven, Missouri, on October 15, 1928, the son of the late Thomas B. & Grace C. (Curry) Pratt. He attended elementary and high school in New Haven.

He was married to Helen Louise (Kunz) Pratt on August 5, 1951, in New Haven, Missouri. Helen preceded him in death on June 22, 2007.

Richard Pratt got his exposure to the profession of pharmacy through his father, Thomas B. Pratt. Richard's father bought into a partnership with E.L. Schroeder to operate Pratts Rexall Drugs in New Haven in June 1928. As a young boy, Richard would enter the store early in the morning to work before going to school. After high school, Richard attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO for two years. He then attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy where he received his Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy in 1951.

Head-On Crash At Highway 50 And Highway C Leaves Two Injured

Gerald, Mo. - Late this afternoon two vehicles collided at the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway C resulting in three ambulances responding, two from Gerald and one from New Haven, along with Beaufort/Leslie Fire Department.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash report the accident occurred around 4:45 this afternoon after 29-year-old Carman Newman of Union, Mo. was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 when she crossed the centerline, hitting an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Kelsey Pecaut Signs To Play Volleyball At Westminster College

Kelsey signs her academic scholarship to attend Westminster College where she will play on the Blue Jay Volleyball team.

New Haven, Mo. - Senior Kelsey Pecaut will be attending Westminster College this fall on an academic scholarship, continuing her volleyball career at the collegiate level.

Pecaut told QuickNewsNow, “After injuring my shoulder in our last regular season game and the chance I may not be able to play at districts was a terrible feeling and then after losing in the championship game I knew I was not done playing....I knew if I would have stopped playing I’d miss it too much.”

OBITUARY: Hermann: Dallas H. Kropp (December 14, 1929 - May 15, 2013)

Dallas H. Kropp, 83, of Hermann, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Frene Valley Health Center.

Mr. Kropp was born in Berger, Missouri on December 14, 1929, the son of the late Wilbur and Flora (Krueger) Kropp.

He was the widower of Margaret Ann Kropp. They were married on October 16, 1954 at Berger, Missouri.

Dallas was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann, Missouri, the Hermann V.F.W. Post 4182 and the Hermann Eagles.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a clerk for Schaumberg Hardware. After retirement he owned & operated K & S Bait Shop.

19 Year Old Injured In Motorcycle verses Tow Truck Accident

Lyon, Mo. - Late yesterday evening 19-year-old Thomas Schackleford of Leslie, Mo. sustained moderate injuries after he was ejected from his motorcycle, this according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

New Haven EMS and New Haven/Berger Fire crews responded at 9:49 p.m. to the area of Highway 185 and Rolling Hills Road, approximately 11 miles southeast of New Haven for a tow truck verses motorcycle crash.

New Haven, Mo. - Flags at statehouses and federal buildings across the country are at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

While all your major media outlets will cover ceremonies held this week in remembrance of  the men and women who gave their lives to protect others, the other 360 days officers are rarely put on a pedestal.

The next time you see a police officer be glad, the day you rarely see officers be deathly afraid because who is going to protect you?

Richard Pratt Dies At The Age Of 84 - A Pillar To New Haven

New Haven, Mo. - Last night Richard Pratt died at the age of 84.  Mayor George Panhorst said, “He was a pillar to New Haven.  He helped set the framework for what New Haven is today.”

Mr. Pratt served the New Haven community in numerous capacities, remembered by most through Pratt’s Pharmacy and the 40 years he spent filling prescriptions.

Mr. Pratt was elected to Citizens Bank Board of Directors in 1973, replacing William Steiner. He was elected Vic-President of the board in 1979 and Vice-Chairman in 2002.  Richard was elected to Citizen Finical Group INC. 1988 and served as a director on both boards until his retirement in 2009.
