2013 spring turkey harvest ticks up another notch - Franklin top county

Hunters’ ability to top last year’s harvest in spite of dismal hunting conditions indicates a continuing rebound of Missouri’s wild turkey flock.  Photo of Kevin Bade and his 2013 Spring Turkey.

JEFFERSON CITY–Hunters shot 42,220 turkeys during Missouri’s regular spring turkey season. That is an increase of 1,773, or 4 percent, from 2012.

Top harvest counties during the regular spring turkey season April 15 through May 5 were Franklin with 996 birds checked, Texas with 879, and Callaway with 710.

This year’s spring turkey season was the safest on record, with only one firearms-related hunting incident reported. That incident was nonfatal and occurred during the regular season.

--The 13 and under Mid-State Force Volleyball team were a dominating “Force” taking first place in all five tournaments during their spring season.

Norman Grannemann Receives Restoration Award From New Haven Preservation Society

Norman Grannemann unveils the plaque after receiving the Restoration Award for Preservation Society.

New Haven, Mo. –Norman Grannemann was born and raised in New Haven, graduating from high school in 1963 before leaving to attend college and eventually calling Okemos, Michigan home.

Living over 500 miles away, Grannemann has played an instrumental role in preserving portions of downtown New Haven, particularly a building where the Boat Paddle Ukulele Company is located today.

On Friday April 26th the New Haven Preservation Society recognized Grannemann for his “continued involvement in preservation work and an important part of our downtown community,” David Menke said.

Wyatt Parsons and Rachel Horstmann 2013 New Haven Prom King and Queen

Rachel Horstmann and Wyatt Parsons were just announced as New Haven's 2013 Senior Prom King and Queen.

Rachel is the daughter of Steve and Andrea Horstmann.  She has been involved in FBLA, FCA, FCCLA, NHS, volleyball, basketball, track, and is manager of the boys’ basketball team.

Some of Rachel’s memorable moments of NHHS include getting stickers in Calculus class and making Lego outfits for Halloween.

New Haven wins Girl's Class 1 District Championship - First Time in School History

Class1 results UPDATED:
Principia High School - It was another historical meet for New Haven's girls team as they became the first in school history to win a Distirct Title.  Chamois' Boys team joined New Haven by winning the Class 1 Boys District Title.

Area Roads Closed and Flood Warnings Issued Overnight

The Franklin County Highway Department informed our office of the following road closures due to high water:

Detmold Road, Hoeman Road,
St. John’s Creek, Boeuf Lutheran,
Argo Road, Dry Branch Road at the slab, Beemont Road, Horstman Road, Robertsville Road,
Old Hwy K (20 ft from Project Rd),
and Four Mile Road (at St Johns Creek).

Berger, Mo. – Friday morning’s blaze left 11 people displaced and the vast majority of their personal belongings destroyed, according to New Haven-Berger Deputy Chief Brad Maune.

According to Maune, there was one person home at the time of the fire, however the structure is divided into three apartments, two upstairs and a third in the basement.  It is not known which apartment the individual was living in.

Kansas City, Mo. - Winter Weather Advisory in the month of May and no pigs are not flying in Kansas City, Mo. where they are expected to get 1 to 2 inches of snow tonight according to the National Weather Service.

We spoke briefly with Sarah Voss, who lives in Kansas City, Mo. about their current weather conditions.

The photos Sarah sent us were taken around 9 p.m. when the heaviest amount of snow was falling.  Sarah reports the snow has only be sticking to grassy areas and sidewalks.

New Haven 4x400 Team Fastest In Conference History - Seth Schenck Is A Beast

New Haven's Hannah Pruessner, who runs the first leg in the 4x400 for New Haven hands it off to Taylor Covington.

St. Clair, Mo. –   “That’s what I’m talking about, that is what we needed to do…excellent everybody” are the first words Coach John Tucker said to his girl’s 4x400m relay team, Hannah Pruessner, Kierstin Monzyk, Taylor Covington, and Molly Munsinger, after setting a new Four Rivers Conference record with a time of 4:12.93.  Just as impressive, all four’s splits were 63 seconds.

Helping to put in perspective of Monday’s record time, based on last year’s times at state, they would have won in Class 1, took second in Class 2, and qualified for state in Class 3. 

Parents Want More Use of Mobile Devices in Classrooms

Washington (PRnews) - In one of the most comprehensive studies of parents' views on mobile devices in education, more than 50 percent of parents believe that schools should make more use of mobile devices in education and 32 percent agree that schools should require them in the classroom.

These findings are from a new study of how parents perceive mobile learning and devices in and out of the classroom. The Living and Learning with Mobile Devices Study was conducted by Grunwald Associates and the Learning First Alliance and underwritten by AT&T*.

App to Help Save Farmers’ Lives‏ Detects Rollovers and Warns Operators of Danger

Jerett Rion, COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tractor rollovers are the leading cause of death among farmers and claim about 250 lives each year according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

These accidents are deadly because they often occur far away from farmers’ homes or roads and they may be unable to reach a phone to call for help.

Now, University of Missouri researchers have developed an application for smartphones that uses GPS systems to locate farmers who have rolled their tractors.

New Haven, Mo. – Tuesday afternoon New Haven (7-8) rebounded from Monday’s 9-2 lose to Cuba by pounding Belle in five innings, scoring 17 runs off a combined 14 hits and 10 RBIs, picking up their seventh win on the year (19-1) as they head into tonight's FRC game vs Union.

Kyle Ruediger had a career night at the plate, knocking in two RBIs off two doubles, scoring four runs and ending the night a perfect 3-3 batting.

Ross Seitter picked up is first win on the season, holding Belle to one run on two hits, improving to 1-2 on  year.
