Fraudulent Income Tax Filings Reported In Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. - This morning Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke released a statement regarding fraudulent tax filings.

Toelke said in the past few weeks his department has received 5 reports of fraudulent income tax filings from citizens living in rural Franklin County.

Citizens reported filing their taxes only to find out that someone had already filed a tax return using their social security number or their identity.

At this point it is recommended that if you become a victim, you should file a report with your local law enforcement agency.  Victims should also contact the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-829-0433.

A recording will instruct you on how to proceed and request the proper forms.  Forms can also be obtained through the IRS Web Site at www.irs.gov and selecting Forms and Publications.  Your local tax preparer may also be able to provide instruction or advice on how to proceed with your case.
