New Haven gets number one and three seeds in South Callaway Tournament

By Kyle Quick

If it seems forever since the last time New Haven has played a game, that's because their last game was last year.  It will be 16 days on Monday since beating Silex on Dec. 21, 2012.  New Haven would have played on Thursday at Bourbon but thanks to the snow that game was canceled.

The South Callaway Tournament kicks off on Monday with the boys playing their first round games with the girls beginning on Tuesday.

New Haven is the number one seed, which Coach Ray Steinhoff said he was surprised at getting the number one seed because he wasn’t real sure how teams from the South Callaway area had been playing, then again he said, “I don’t think I have ever had a seeding meeting quite like this one.”

At the time of the meeting New Haven was 4-3, Montgomery County 4-3, Harrisburg 4-3, North Callaway 3-3, Hermann 3-3, and South Callaway 3-2.  Any of the top six seeds could easily be playing for first on Saturday especially looking at who beat who.

New Haven beat Montgomery in their tournament and then lost to them a week later.  Montgomery had beaten Hermann, Hermann beat South Callaway and South Callaway had knocked off Montgomery and New Bloomfield.

New Haven came out the number one seed and will play (8) New Bloomfield, (2) Harrisburg plays (7) Russellville, (3) Montgomery County will take on (6) South Callaway and (4) North Callaway will play Hermann who is the fifth seed.

Steinhoff said they were able to get through Christmas break without any added injuries and gave those who were banged up time to recover.  Christmas also gave Kyle Ruediger a chance for his battle wounds to heal after hurting his hip earlier in the season.  Then adding insult to injury; against New Bloomfield he and another player collided, sending them both to the Emergency Room for stiches.  Ironically, New Haven plays New Bloomfield again on Tuesday.

Steinhoff said, “We were able to get a lot done during the break.  I was happy how we practiced, but have some concern having gone 16 days without playing a game.  I talked to the kids after Thursday’s game was cancelled about being ready to play on Monday.  It helps some that we have seen New Bloomfield but they have seen us too…. it’s getting back into that game playing routine.”

In the girls bracket New Haven is seeded third and will play Tues. night against (6) South Callaway who they easily beat in the first week of Dec.  Hermann is the number one seed but lost to (2) North Callaway several days after the seeding meeting.

Hermann will play (8) Montgomery, defending Class 2 State Champions Harrisburg is seeded forth and will take on the fifth seed, Russellville and North Callaway faces (7) New Bloomfield.

The Lady Rocks go into Tuesday night’s game after thumping Cuba 57-36.  The Lady Rocks play Tues. at 7:30 p.m. at the High School.

The Boys play on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Elementary School.
