Vehicle flees Washington checkpoint, runs over officer's foot

Washington, Mo. - On Friday, September 6, 2013 from 10 p.m. until Saturday at 2 a.m., the Washington Police Department conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint at the intersection of Highway 47 and 1st Street. 

384 vehicles were checked on northbound Highway 47 from 3rd Street to 1st Street. 

Three individuals were taken into custody and the following charges sought:

Possession of Marijuana – 1
Drivers License Violation – 2

One summons was also issued at the scene and the driver released for an improper vehicle registration. 

In another case, as officers approached a vehicle the driver sped off in an attempt to evade the checkpoint and ran over the foot of Police Officer Eric Saavedra. 

The suspect was last seen near 8th and Roosevelt Streets in a gold vehicle with damage to the driver’s side.  He was a white male with a beard and blond hair.  Investigation is continuing.  Officer Saavedra was not injured as a result of this incident.

The Washington Police Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists when these necessary checkpoints are conducted.  They are a valuable tool to assist in removing impaired motorists from our roadways.
